Money Matters: Tughriks, ATMs, and Tipping on the Steppe.
Cash is king the moment you leave the capital city.

Local Currency: The official currency is the Mongolian Tughrik (MNT). While major hotels and restaurants in Ulaanbaatar accept international credit cards (Visa and Mastercard), rural areas operate entirely on cash.
Exchanging Money: Exchange your cash upon arrival at the airport or at banks in downtown Ulaanbaatar. Bring crisp, uncreased US Dollar or Euro bills, as local banks frequently reject older or damaged currency.
ATM Availability: ATMs are widespread in Ulaanbaatar and provincial centers (aimag capitals), but completely non-existent once you enter national parks or nomadic territory. Always stock up on cash before leaving town.
Tipping Etiquette: Tipping is highly appreciated but optional. For private tours, a baseline guideline is $15–$20 USD per day for your guide and $10–$15 USD per day for your driver, presented at the end of the trip.
