Navigating the Steppe Capital: A Tourist Guide to Ulaanbaatar Public Buses. Public buses are the most affordable way to move around the city center, provided you skip the cash and use a smart card.

No Cash Allowed: Cash is strictly not accepted on board city buses. Every rider must use a smart card called U Money.
Buying and Recharging: Purchase a standard U Money card for roughly 3,600 to 3,800 MNT at major bus stop kiosks (look for small "TUTS" booths) or at 24-hour convenience chains like CU Mongolia and GS25. You can reload the card at the same counters using cash, or via local mobile apps like Hipay and SocialPay.
Fares and Free Transfers: A standard bus ride costs 1,000 MNT, while electric trolleybuses cost 500 MNT. If you need to switch buses, your transfer is completely free within 30 minutes, provided you tap your card on the reader at both the front door when entering and the rear door when exiting.
Navigation Apps: Download the official UB Smart Bus App on Google Play to track routes and check real-time arrival schedules in English. Note that specific station names on the map will remain in Mongolian Cyrillic.
Future Transit: While buses are currently the only public transit option, the city government has announced that major construction on the highly anticipated Ulaanbaatar Metro system is officially slated to begin.
